Formula One: Schumacher comes out of coma and leaves hospital!

Home / Formula1 / Formula One: Schumacher comes out of coma and leaves hospital!

Michael Schumacher, Mercedes, Monaco 2012Michael Schumacher has left hospital in Grenoble after being bought out his coma after a skiing accident in December. The coma was medically induced after the 7-time Formula One world champion suffered severe brain trauma whilst skiing off piste.

The German is said to have been saved by his helmet, which is understood to have been split in two when Michael fell and hit his head on a rock.

A statement from Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm confirmed the news earlier today:

“Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma any more. His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.

“The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him. For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye.”

Schumacher underwent two operations in the days after the accident to remove life-threatening blood clots before being placed into a coma. Schumacher’s family announced in late January that the drugs being used to keep Michael in a coma were being reduced to awaken Michael, but since then announcements on his condition had been few and far between.

Fans around the world have been paying tribute to Schumacher throughout his recovery, with many drivers in Formula One remaining hopeful for Michael whilst he remained in his coma.

It is important to note that Schumacher is still in recovery from his accident, but the news of this major upturn in his condition is excellent. We hope that Michael is able to continue to make a full recovery.
